Responsible gambling
Think of gambling as spending on entertainment. Results are random, and over time the operator keeps an advantage.
Set limits before you start
- Avoid playing when you are upset, tired or have been drinking.
- Never borrow money or use credit to play.
- Decide how much you can afford to lose: money meant for entertainment, not for rent, food, school fees or loans.
- Set a time limit for each session and stop when it is reached.
Warning signs
Watch for these signs:
- chase losses with bigger bets;
- spend more money or time than you planned;
- gamble to forget about worries;
- borrow money or miss bills because of gambling;
- feel the need to keep gambling secret;
Ways to stay in control
- Self-exclusion: closing your account for months or years.
- Reality checks: reminders of how long you have played and how much you have spent.
- Cooling-off period: a short break that locks the account.
